Boy Scouts

I have been a member of Boy Scout Troop 445, out of Savage, Minnesota, U.S.A. for as long as I can remember. Well, not quite that long, but it sure seems that way. I joined in the fall of '93, and eventually worked my way up in the hierarchy. Throughout my youth in Scouts I held almost every leadership position - Assistant Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol Leader, and Junior Assistant Scout Master. Now that I am over 18, I have been permanently removed from any of those positions and given the illustrious title of Assistant Scout Master.

Thanks to the help of those around me, including friends, family, and leadership in Scouts, I was able to finish off my Eagle. Yes, that means I, too, am an Eagle Scout. Somehow, I was able to sneak in the last few merit badges before my eighteenth birthday. It is kind of interesting - about half of the Eagle Scouts I know just barely snuck it in before they were exempt from the honor, and the other half sped through everything and had it before their 16th birthday. Rare is the person that falls in the middle - the non-procrastinating, yet unhurried person. Go figure.

Although the size of Troop 445 has fluctuated quite a bit in the years that I have been a member, we have settled down recently to about 25-30 boys. While not a huge number, it is still quite sizable for our troop. We have had 4 Eagles in the last few years, which is quite good for the size and age troop we have (the average Scout's age in our Troop is about 15). This past summer, several of the older boys and a few adults enjoyed two weeks of hiking in the Rocky Mountains at Philmont. Philmont is a high-adventure camp, which basically means that it is physically, mentally, and emotionally challenging - in other words, a load of fun.
