Music Performance Major

Ahh, music, that which allows us to speak soul to soul, rather than use these crude intermediaries of the physical plane called bodies. As you have probably already guessed, music is one of my greatest passions in life. It not only acts as a driving force, but also as a relief when stress levels get too high.

I am working for a music performance major (clarinet) at the University of St. Thomas. I have played the clarinet for almost eleven years now, and finally can make some true music. While I realize that I have an incredibly long journey ahead of me if I wish to be up to my own standards, I also realize that I have some talent in this area. For example, I am now principal clarinet in the University of St. Thomas Wind Ensemble and Concert Band. The latter band is the combination of both the Wind Ensemble and the Symphonic Wind Ensemble.

Some of the other ensembles I participate in include the Saxophone Quartet (on tenor saxophone) and the Jazz Band (again, on tenor saxophone). I am also working on a minor in Jazz Studies, which is one of the main reasons I am in Jazz Band (besides the fact that I love jazz). I am currently studying both clarinet and saxophone privately. My hope is that someday I will become proficient at all woodwinds.

I just completed my third year of study at St. Thomas, which means that I am finished with all of my music theory courses. Those of you who are taking courses in theory know how good that feels. I have also been taking lessons in composition, where I attempt to break every rule that I learned in my theory courses. It seems to work fairly well, as I like the music I write (no bias).

I suppose that is all for now. I will be sure to update this every so often, especially in the next few weeks, when I am working out all the bugs with this site.
